Ways to manage a panic attack

Anxiety is a common feeling to have, because of the intense competition and ability to multitask. A person could also feel a great amount of fear in a short span of time and such a condition is called a panic attack. It is a sudden feeling of anxiety where an individual experiences symptoms such as the feeling of faint, nausea, chest pain, sweating, shaking or trembling and fear of going crazy.

It isn’t a comfortable feeling to have a panic attack, there is a constant attack of anxiety. Panic attacks last for a duration of ten minutes and then become greater or lesser. These attacks are not easy to handle, individuals actually feel they could be suffering from breathing disorders, thyroid problems, and heart disease, and also other medical conditions. The symptoms become so intense and uncomfortable that there have been emergency visits.

We do wonder about when a panic attack can strike, it can happen anytime, when in an anxious or calm state. A piece of shocking news can trigger a panic attack, and it can also happen from wondering about the unexpected like how is the new workplace going to be, fear of attending university and so on. Panic attacks happen to people with psychological disorders, a person with social anxiety will be extremely scared of speaking in front of a large audience and this could set off a panic attack.

When a person experiences many episodes of panic attacks the condition is called a panic disorder. If you feel yourself or a loved one could have a panic disorder watch out for these signs.

The person will experience a panic attack at any given time caused by constant worry with no reason attached to it.

The individual will avoid visiting places where they have felt anxious such as a road where an accident has occurred, close to a hospital, fear of standing in a queue and so on. People who suffer from panic disorder have anticipatory anxiety where the individual feels a lot of stress and fear. When there is a frequent attack of panic attacks, there is the anxiety of when another attack will happen, and this is a very uncomfortable situation to be in.

Phobias can trigger a panic attack there is fear of heights called Acrophobia, fear of being in open spaces called Agoraphobia, fear of flying referred to as Aviophobia. Caffeine, alcohol, certain medications, and sugar can also cause a panic attack.

It is not an easy feeling to have a panic attack, and if you or loved one suffers from this condition, it is important to seek medical help and counseling. There are however ways to manage panic attacks and feel relaxed and happy.

The most important thing to do is to recognize that you have a panic attack:

It is an uncomfortable feeling to constantly suffer from a panic attack, it will be beneficial to acknowledge it. Realize you are having an attack, and gradually try to calm yourself by breathing in and out. Tell yourself this is a temporary situation and work towards feeling positive and happy.

Whenever you feel stressed out focus on a topic that interests you:

If you are extremely worried about something, slowly work on distracting your mind on a topic that interests you. It could be a game on your phone, a fascinating subject on the internet, a book, artwork or anything that excites you. This way your mind is concentrated on good and fun things and you are not likely to feel a panic attack.

Indulge in outdoor activity:

Whenever you feel stressed, go outside take in the fresh air, or head to the parlor and feel good about your image. The thought of feeling good will send out relaxing and positive vibes.

Exercise regularly:

Get into the habit of exercising regularly, it is a good remedy to overcome stress, when you exercise endorphins are released and it makes anyone feel good and relaxed.

Go out with a company you enjoy:

Whenever you feel stressed, go out with someone who you enjoy being with, and when out try to relax as much as possible. Focus your mind on the present fun stuff.
